SERIOUS MONDAY: B LAB SCHEME, A NEW TOOL FOR THE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY MOVEMENT

A new scheme has been set up to help consumers separate good companies from good marketing.

The founders of B Lab, a non profit organisation which has set up the new certification scheme, say it will be a vital tool for the social responsibility movement.

It says many socially responsible companies – such as the Body Shop and Ben and Jerry’s – have proved so successful that they have been bought out by larger companies that don’t always maintain the founders’ standards for social good.

Under the new B Lab scheme (the B stands for beneficial) any company seeking to become a B Corporation will have to amend its rules to state that managers must consider the interests of employees, the community and the environment as well as the interests of shareholders.

Companies will be ranked on their answers to more than 100 questions which cover topics such as their environmental and transparency policies.

B Lab admits that its scheme is “a work in progress” but says it hopes that its strict standards will help to protect companies and consumers who work for the greater good.
