It’s conker season folks – have you collected any yet? If not, there’s still time to grab yourself a few – even if you don’t have youngsters keen for a conker fight.

Conkers – from the magnificent horse chestnut tree – have been gathered by countless generations of children, although many schools have now banned conker fights in the playground in case children get hurt. 

(According to some experts, robbing your children of this traditional game, is paranoid parenting at its best – and I’m afraid I’d have to agree. How many children do you know who’ve ended up in hospital because of a conker fight? Now, compare that to the number of youngsters hurt following an accident in the home.)

Sorry, I got a little side tracked there but I would far rather see my little one outside having a conker fight than vegetating in front of the Disney Channel !

The Royal Forestry Society has chosen the horse chestnut as its tree of the month for October and if conker fights are new to you, there are plenty of websites that can show you how it’s done.

But if you think you’re too mature for conker fighting (which is a great pity since it’s a lot of fun!) then it’s still worth collecting some for display.

Conkers are beautiful things – especially when polished – and a bowlful of shiny wooden conkers makes a wonderful autumn decoration.

And of course, there are plenty of other things out there worth collecting ; Pine cones look good on display in a disused fireplace or you could collect chestnuts (either to roast or to use as a decoration.)

Apparently some people even collect berries, grass and flower petals to make their own children’s paints. You grind them all up and add a drop of water to produce natural colours. I’ll have to give it a try.

Isn’t Mother Nature wonderful?
