LAZY FRIDAY: MIXING GYM WITH GARDENING

Today we’re turning the spotlight on green gyms which are springing up all over the UK and give you a chance to both keep fit and help the environment.

So, if you find it hard to keep up the enthusiasm for exercise during the long, cold winter months, then a green gym might just give you the motivation you need to stay active rather than go into hibernation until spring 🙂

Run by the BTCV, green gyms give you the chance to “work out” in the open air by taking part in practical environmental or gardening work.

Green gym sessions last for up to three hours and you will be working with a trained leader. A typical work-out could include helping to establish a community garden, planting a hedge or clearing an overgrown path.

Each session starts with some basic warm up exercises and you will be shown how to use any tools needed for the job. No experience is necessary and you don’t need to take along any equipment (but be sure to wear old clothes suitable for outdoor work.)

People who are fit and active are 50 per cent less likely to have a stroke or heart attack but according to BTCV, an astonishing 70 per cent of us are not active enough. Physical activity and the great outdoors are also good for your mental health too and are thought to ease stress and help fight depression.
