CRAZY WEDNESDAY: WE ARE ALL LITTLE GREEN MEN NOW…

I just could not resist the wonderful story about a personal flying saucer being ready for production. The M200G is the brainchild of Dr Paul Moller, head of Moller International in Davis, California. Looking like something out of a 1950s science fiction movie, the prototype has demonstrated vertical take-off and landing, and hovers at about 10 feet off the ground. The company claims that it is easy to operate, and at its current operating height does not require a pilot’s licence. Dr Moller believes that craft like these will be the personal commuter transport of the future.

Production is scheduled to begin within the next few months, and the output is hoped to rise to about 250 a year. Amazingly, it will run on petrol, diesel or ethanol, and with an ethanol-water mixture is expected to fall well below the limit needed for Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) standard set by the California Air Resources Board. A press release carries the claim, “The Rotapower engine… is able to achieve nearly emissions-free performance while producing nearly two horsepower for every pound of engine weight.”

It has been a long journey to get to this point – Dr Moller has been working on his idea for more than four decades now. I should certainly hope that the M200G is easier to fly than the 1960s prototype in this delightful test flight video clip.

Moller’s longer term production vehicle, and the flagship product is far more ambitious, though. Looking slightly more like a conventional car, the M400 “Skycar” is a cross between a car and a flying saucer, able to perform vertical take-off and landing, but also designed to be driven on the road. Capable of climbing 6,000ft a minute and travelling at up to 400 miles an hour, you can order one on the company’s website for between a half and one million dollars, depending on how many people also order.

I’m not sure that either of these will really catch on, but they look marvellous and great fun. I can’t wait to see the first one to hover down my street!!!
