WHEN THE MEDIA TYCOON GOES GREEN

Rupert Murdoch, owner & CEO of News Corp (newspapers, magazines, tv, satellite, film, internet), recently announced he’d “change the DNA of his business”. Murdoch and News Corp are going green, that’s this week big news.

NEWS CORP GOES GREEN

The news surprised everyone as Mr. Rupert had never been a particularly green-minded business man. Better later than never, he changed his mind, mostly influenced by his son James, Tony Blair and Al Gore. Now he wants to take News Corp carbon neutral and “educate and engage” his audience.

And apparently this isn’t just talking. He started by buying a hybrid Lexus for himself and provided golf carts to Fox film lot in Hollywood. In addition, the company turned its fleet green and started using renewable energy along with other measures.

Undeniably, News Corp can make a great difference spreading the green attitude and actively lead communities and nation towards the next step. Questioning whether News  Corp is doing that only for profits purposes is legitimate but not essential as long as such actions generate a general wellbeing greater than Mr. Murdoch sole profits. Let’s encourage this then!

What’s your opinion on that? Should we give less credit to green actions emanating from freshly converted businesses ? What do you think Rupert Murdoch can bring to the green effort?
